*- I stared up at the building in front of me. “Goode High School,” I muttered to myself. It was the middle of the school day so no one was outside. I was a new student here. I took a deep breath and walked through the front door. I stopped by the main office to pick up my schedule. My first class was English, taught by Mr. Blofis. I finally found my class and knocked on the door. A middle-aged looking man opened it. For a second all he did was stare at me but he got over it. “M-May I help you miss?” He asked politely. “Yes, I’m Melinda Welles. I’m a new student.” I replied. His jaw dropped and his eyes widened but he shook his head and held open the door. I pulled on my hood and walked through the door and sat down. All I remember thinking was ‘please don’t be one of those teachers that call new students to the front of the class, please don’t be one of those teachers that call new students to the front of the class.’ But of course, he was. “Ok class we have a new student today.” I closed my eyes and cursed under my breath. “Melinda Welles?” He called I got up and walked up to the front. He motioned for me to take my hood of. I did, letting my hair fall to my shoulders. There were a series of gasps and ‘OMG’s. Someone whistled but I didn’t care. I’d heard it all before.

^- I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. She was the most beautiful girl I’d ever seen. (Other than Annabeth) She had medium length, dark hair, really, really pale skin, and dark circles under her eyes. But what was really scary was her eyes. I mean, whoa. They were gold. My stepdad, Paul Blofis, must’ve noticed that too, (Though I didn’t know how, considering the Mist) because he looked at me and nodded, like he had it under control. “So, Melinda, where’d you move from?” Paul- I mean Mr. Blofis- asked. “My family travels a lot. We came here from San Francisco.” She stated. Paul looked at me as if to see if I got that. I did. Paul looked at the class again. “So does anyone want to show Ms. Melinda around the school?” He asked. Every boy in the class raised their hands. “How about you Percy?” I nodded. “Sure Mr. Blofis.” The bell rang a few minutes later and I immediately walked up to Melinda. “Hi.” I said. “Hi.” She said back. “So…” I didn’t get to finish because my sentence was interrupted by an ear-piercing growl. Everyone looked up curiously, but I’m the only one who really saw what was happening. A hellhound was outside the school. Melinda’s eyes narrowed. “Not here,” We both muttered. We looked at each other questioningly. Then there was another growl. “Um, I’ll be right back.” I said, taking off down the hall. She did the same. I snuck out the side door. Once I was outside I uncapped Riptide. It grew into a three foot long bronze sword. I looked around for the hellhound. Something wet landed on my head. “Gross,” I muttered. I gulped and looked up. The hellhound was looking straight down at me, its red eyes glowing. It growled and snapped at me, but I quickly jumped to the side. When I caught it off guard I stabbed upward. It yelped in pain but didn’t turn to yellow dust like I hoped it would. I thought I was about to become kibble, but the hellhound just looked past me. It stared for a second and then took off the other way. I looked behind me wondering, ‘What could be scary enough to scare a hellhound away?’, but nothing was there. A cold feeling washed over me. I was deep in thought when I heard the bell ring. “Freak!” I muttered. I ran off toward the school, hoping I wouldn’t get in too much trouble for being late.

*- I sat there watching as Percy run back to the school. I couldn’t believe it. I thought Percy was normal. I cursed under my breath. Does this have to happen everywhere I go? I didn’t want to do this, but I was going to have to. I sprinted back into the school, so I wasn’t late for class. When I passed Percy in the hall I shot him a look of death. He looked confused. I couldn’t believe he was still keeping up the act!

^-“How was school sweetie?” My mom asked as I walked into our apartment. I hated it when she called me that, but I was too freaked out to care. “Weird.” I answered, tossing my backpack onto the couch and walking into the kitchen to talk to her. “What happened?” She asked. “I really dunno. It’s a long story. One that involves a weird new girl with weird eyes, a hellhound, and getting yelled at by Mr. Haynes.” I replied. She opened her mouth to say something, but just then Paul walked inside. “Hi honey.” He said giving my mom a kiss on the cheek. “Hi.” She replied. “So Percy, did you learn anything about Melinda?” He asked. I sighed, frustrated. “Nothing. Nada. Zilch.” I said. “Well I did,” He said smiling happily like he knew something I didn’t. “What?” I asked curiously. “Well I went to the…” He didn’t finish. He was looking at something behind me. I turned to see an image appearing in the small rainbow formed by the light coming through the window. An I.M. (Iris message) In the image I saw Chiron, who was standing there calmly, Annabeth, who was looking happy to see me, Mr. D, who looked like he could care less, and Thalia, who was just Thalia. “Percy,” Chiron greeted me. He looked like something was wrong. “What’s wrong Chiron?” I asked. Mr. D rolled his eyes. “Could we just tell him?” He asked, annoyed. “Percy something’s happening. There has been strange things going on outside the borders of camp.” He said. This must’ve been bad. This was one of the first times I had ever actually heard worry in his voice. “What kind of things? Monsters?” I asked. Annabeth answered, “Worse.” “What could be worse than… No way. Is it… him?” I said. I saw Chiron and Thalia share a worried glance. “We don’t know. But we don’t want you to worry.” Chiron said. “Don’t tell him that.” Mr. D spat. “And will you please go ahead and ask him. You’re using up all my infrequent caller minutes. I can’t talk for free if I don’t have any minutes.” Mr. D complained. “You’ve been saving them for over a hundred years. You’re not going to lose them all in one call.” Thalia stated. “Well I am if you don’t talk faster.” He argued. They started arguing. I swear the only person Mr. D hates more than me is Thalia. “Guys. Guys. GUYS!!” Annabeth yelled. They stopped arguing. Annabeth looked back at me. “Percy we need you back at camp.” Annabeth said. I didn’t know what to say. I mean in a way I had to go. But I really didn’t have to go. I wanted to go but….. Mr. D banged his hand on the table beside him. “Will you please hurry up?!” He yelled angrily. “Well…” Annabeth prodded. I looked at my mom and Paul. Paul couldn’t see this, but my mom could. My mom had a sad expression on her face, but she nodded. “I’ll come.” I said. “Annabeth’s face lit up, but she quickly put on a straight face. “Finally!” Mr. D said, throwing his hands up. “You can say by now Peter Johnson!” He yelled. “It’s Percy Jackson!” I yelled back. “Whatever.” He said raising his hand to cut the connection. “Percy, I…” Annabeth began, but Mr. D disconnected before she could finish.
