*- I sat there waiting for her to wake
up. After I had killed (well not technically, since monsters can’t die) the
monster, I got Thalia and moved her to one of my safe houses. It was where I
came when I needed medical stuff. It was an old, rundown hospital. Even though
it was abandoned there were still leftover bandages, burn medicine, and some
ice packs. I put some bandages on her cuts and gave her some painkiller out of
a first-aid kit I had. I hoped she woke up soon. I had been waiting forever. Just when I found someone like me. Of course
they had to die. “Come on, Thalia. It’s gonna be ok. You’re gonna wake up.
It’s ok.” I didn’t know if he was talking to Thalia or me. Thalia groaned. I looked
up and was relieved to see her awake.
^- My head felt like it
had run over by an eighteen-wheeler. “Ugh, my head,” I complained. “Here you
go.” Luke handed me an icepack. I took it without arguing. “What the heck
happened? Where are we?” I asked. I knew we had been attacked by something. But
after that it was a little blurry. “We were attacked by a Laistrygonian.” He
replied. “A what?” I wasn’t even going to try to pronounce that word. “A
giant,” He clarified. “You got hurt, so I brought you here.” “Where exactly is
here?” I asked, looking around at the pale white walls (well I guess they used
to be white; they looked really old) and many rooms. “A hospital?” I guessed.
“Yeah. It’s one of my safe houses.” “Wait, one
of your safe houses?” I asked curiously. “I don’t know how many I have. I lost
count.” It then dawned on me that if he had a lot of safe houses, he had to
have run away a while back. “Luke how old are you?” I asked. “Fourteen, why?”
“How long have you been out alone?” I asked. His face turned hard. I tried to
read his cold expression. I couldn’t. “A few years.” “How come you left if your
mom told you about this demigod stuff? I mean did she kick you out or…” “IT’S
NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS OK!” I winced at the bitterness in his voice. His face
turned apologetic. “I’m sorry Thalia. It’s just that…” “It’s ok. It’s fine.” I
said. I was a little hurt, but obviously he had a worse relationship with his
mother than I did. And if it was that bad I really didn’t want to know. “We better
get out of here.” He said. “Can you walk?” “I think so,” I replied getting up.
Yeah, big mistake. As soon as I stood up I felt nauseas. My knees buckled and I
fell backwards. Luckily Luke caught me before I hit the ground. “You ok?” He
carried me out the front door. “Never been better.” I murmured, looking deep
into his eyes. He was really hot. We stopped at an alley for the night. We were
about to go to sleep when we heard a soft thumping noise. Luke grabbed his
sword and walked over to a stack of boxes. I tapped my bracelet and it turned
into a huge shield. He pushed aside one of the boxes and, sitting there was a
little girl. She looked about six or seven. The girl was wearing ripped and
tattered clothes and she had messy, curly blond hair and big gray eyes. She
looked scared. She lunged at Luke with a hammer, but he was too quick. He
grabbed her arm and held her up. “Let go of me you big, mean, ugly monster!”
She screamed in a high squeaky voice. Luke and I shared a worried glance.
“Thalia, put that thing up, she’s already freaked out enough.” Luke ordered. I
tapped the shield and it turned back into a bracelet. “What’s your name kiddo?”
I asked, even though the girl was still kicking and screaming. “Annabeth
Chase!” She said, giving up the fight. “Can you put me down now?” She asked.
“Promise me you won’t run away?” Luke asked. “No.” She answered. “Why do you
want to run away?” He asked. “Because I don’t want you to hurt me.” Luke
smiled. “We’re not gonna hurt you, Annabeth.” I said. “Liars!” She yelled,
kicking Luke in the gut. He doubled over and started gasping for air. As soon
as Annabeth hit the ground she made a run for it. I ran in front of her. “Stop!
It’s ok Annabeth! We’re like you; we can see the monsters too. You’re not
alone.” This caught her attention. She lowered the hammer she was about to hit
us with. “Really?” She asked hopefully. “If you promise not to kick me again
we’ll explain.” Luke said, finally able to stand up straight. She nodded. We
sat down and told her everything. I couldn’t imagine how she felt. She was only
seven.
*-As I talked I kept
my eyes on Annabeth. I knew how she felt; scared, helpless, and confused.
Thinking of all those words together made me think of my mom. It made me think
of the times I had locked myself in the closet when I was little when she had
one of her episodes. It made me think of the times her eyes turned green and
she would start muttering stuff about my fate. I don’t know what scared me
more- her freak outs or whatever my fate was that made her freak out like that. “Can I have a sword?” Annabeth asked,
after we were done telling her. I smiled, tearing away from my memories. “I’ve
got something better.” I pulled out a bronze knife and handed it to her. “This
isn’t a sword.” She said, sounding disappointed. “It’s better than a hammer.”
Thalia commented. “Knives are only for the best fighters. They aren’t as strong
or as big as a sword, but they find weak spots in your enemy’s armor. It takes
a smart strategist to use a knife.” I explained. She smiled. She must’ve liked
the idea of being called a smart fighter. “You’re part of our family now
kiddo.” Thalia said. “Family?” she asked. “Yeah. Stick with us and you won’t
need anyone else.” I said. “Promise me you won’t hurt me?” Annabeth asked. “I
promise.” I said. She smiled. I made a silent vow that I was going to protect
this kid no matter what. I wasn’t going to let her be alone like me.
SIX
MONTHS LATER…
$- I couldn’t believe it.
I’d never seen Chiron this upset before. “How could you let this happen?!” He
asked furiously. “You were supposed to stop them six months ago!” He yelled,
pacing around on his hooves. “I-I-I’m s-s-s-so s-sorry Ch-Chiron.” I stuttered.
“Sorry? Three half-bloods, that should’ve been here six months ago, are running
around the country being chased by monsters and you’re SORRY?!” I winced at the
anger and worry in his voice. “Chiron this has happened before. Why are you so
worried now?”
